Eh, this is old. Drew this back in April. I got new stuff, but I can't post it. Something about crazy electronic midgai wanting to climb into my brain through the electronic pulses sent thru my fingertips via my keyboard. It's all very weird and strange. I don't know what to do about it other than just ignore it...because we all know that ignoring a problem is the best way to overcome it.

If we ignore it, it will eventually go away...right?

That's how I deal with all of my bills.

Oh, and for those saying this sketch is blasphemous, I say "HOW DARE YOU SIR...OR MAAM...OR SIRMAAM!?" How could it be blasphemous to make the son of God look like a totally badass Vietnamese killing machine? Turn the other cheek? I think not. That was your grandaddy's Jesus Christ. Kids today need a savior that will get their attention! Make them stand up and pledge their allegiance to all that is righteous and holy!

They need a Jesus Christ that is going to look Doctore right in the eye and declare, "MADNESS!? THIS IS NOT MADNESS...THIS IS NEW JERSEY!"

Man, so you want to know what happens when good ideas go bad? You're looking at it. Sonuvabitch had me by the throat, and I was like "Why are you hurting me!?" to which it replied, "Because I'm the bastard son of a whore and a pimp!" At first I was sort of glad, because I often like to think of myself as one who be "pimpin" but I quickly learned this a pimp of a different meaning.

I fought back with my pressure sensitive stylus I've dubbed, Sir Draws-A-Lot (because I'm nothing if not original), but the beast dodged my every thrust. I stepped back and began to ready myself for another advance, but it was in that single moment that the beast struck, crippling my drawing arm, and penetrating my creativity with its bicuspid of failure.

Rendered weak, and unable to continue, I dropped to my knees and surrendered to its will. As I finished bucket filling the last of the empty spaces in the line art, the beast then said in a mocking growl, "Now give me Color Halftone so that all may bear witness to your half-assed shame!" And so I did...and so it has become...forever a symbol of my ever growing artistic shame.

Jason's Dirty Little Secret!

Yesterday was Friday the 13th, and I thought it would be cool to do a little drawing in honor of the special day. Of course, the only thing that would make sense to draw on a day like today would be Jason Voorhees! However, I wanted to be different from the rest of the folks who would be throwing down lines today...so I opted to draw up little Jason Voorhees...before he went and got all murderousy!

I draw this on my livestream which you can check out here. For some reason my last couple of livestream videos have not made it into the on demand section, but hopefully this one will. I had fun drawing it, and it was interesting to sit there and try and improve a comic strip on the stop like that.

Anyway, hope you dig it. If you don't...well...what can I say? I'm sorry you're a horrible person. ;D

GREETINGS PEOPLE OF EARTH!

So you wouldn't know it by the amount of activity on my blog, but I've been quite busy. I've got several projects that I'm knee-deep in, and it feels great to be working on stuff that I truly believe in, and can't wait to share! While I can't talk about most of what I'm working on, I can go ahead and share a couple things that I really shouldn't share, but am going to anyway, because I'm silly.

Actually, I'm sharing them because, while they're only test strips and not going to be apart of the official project once it launches, they feature time sensitive jokes that, well, people probably won't get or enjoy as much a year from now...which is when they would otherwise be seen (included as bonus material in a collection or something). And I like the jokes I make to be gotten when they're their most funny. I know...as I said, I'm silly.

So here are a couple of comic strips I cooked up for a webcomic project I'm working on with a long time friend and former movie review website collaborator, Ron Hogan. He actually had nothing to do with these particular strips, as he's busy writing stuff that's way funnier. I just used these as a means to see how the characters looked in the panels, and if I needed to do any tweaking. And I do, but I'm getting there. Still though, I like how these turned out, and I'm really enjoying the process of developing these characters and ideas into something that I think people will really enjoy reading.

Oh, and about the blog. After a couple of weeks away, I come back to a mess. I shouldn't be surprised...after all, I made it. I don't know what I was thinking either. So I'm gonna take some time here soon to clean it up a little, and only put up what's necessary. Blogs should be fun and easy to use...that's my motto.

So in my last post I mentioned that I was starting a new collabo sketch blog with my buddy, Dustin Evans. Well, we're not two weeks into the new project, and we're both still digging it big time! Started a new collabo sketch blog...

So I completely forgot to mention that I started a new sketch blog with a buddy of mine, Dustin Evans. It's called The Blog of Eternal Sketch, and it will feature new art from both of us every Monday and Friday. It'll be themed art, each of us putting our slant on the same topic.

All art will be available for purchase, and is being done on high quality 9x12 Bristol. The price for each piece will be $55, which includes US shipping costs. The pieces are being sold first come first serve.

This is our first week. Monday's theme this week was Little Red Riding Hood, and tomorrow's theme is...well, you'll just have to go follow the blog to see for yourself! Here's a little teaser of my piece for Monday...

Got lots going on right now. The rough sketch above is a quick thing I put together for a project I'll be starting next week with a buddy of mine. I'll announce it all official like when the time is right.

Still doing design work on a cartoon project by my buddy, Mike Kallio. It's coming along slow because I'm not loving ANYTHING I'm doing with it. The style just isn't right, and I'm stressing myself out about it.

Also putting the finishing touches on a project for an old high school buddy of mine who is looking to become a golf instructor. I'll post that stuff when it's done.

Lastly, working on a really cool Street Fighter project with my studio mate, Hainanu Saulque. We're looking to unveil it at WonderCon next month. Until then, here's a sneak peak what one of the pieces. It's the line work for the hero of the franchise, Ryu. Enjoy...

Brain Vomit Vol. 1 PREVIEW

I finished putting the final touches on my new art book last night. It oughta be off to the printer on Monday. Just a few more things to get together before I head up to Seattle for ECCC. Above are two preview pages from the book titled Brain Vomit Vol. 1. The first page is a bunch of random sketches I've done over the last year or so. The other is a page I put together displaying one of my original properties, Cracker Ace.

In the meantime, I've got a couple projects I need to have finished before I go, so it's back to work with me!

Man, what a day! Too much to do, not enough time. I wish I could pull an all nighter to catch up, but I can't...because I'm old. The mere thought of getting no sleep just makes me anxious. Even right now, as I type this, I'm sort of getting antsy.

Anyway, today's sketches ain't the best, but they'll have to do. I started with the Skeletor (which was completely from memory, which is why it doesn't look right), and the other guy is just some random dude I sketched because I couldn't think of any other character to draw. I'll call him Gustof the Great...there you go. Totally original. Don't steal it, or I'll threaten to hunt you down and slap yo face, but will actually do absolutely nothing. You've been warned. WHOOP!

It's a Sketch Update kinda day...

Not a whole lot to say today. Did a lot of sketching in between the day job and taking care of my daughter. Got home and did some prelim sketches of some monsters I'm doing for a project. After that, I started putting the cover of my art book together. I like the concept I came up with, as it fits nicely with the title. My art book is gonna be called Brain Vomit Vol. 1 so I guess you can sort of imagine what might be in there...although I don't know if you'll actually be able to see what I'm planning to do. I just hope it comes out well, because I know how important covers are to selling books...and make no mistake...I want to sell a lot of books! I'm not just looking to have an art book for the sake of having an art book...I'm proud of the stuff that I'm putting in there, and I want people to see it, and want to buy it so they can see it again, and again...

I don't mean to sound cocky or arrogant, because that's not me. But I'm definitely proud of what I'm putting together, so I'm not afraid to say to the world, "Hey you, this is me...get over here and took a look already!"

And because no update its own coding without some art, here are a couple of the sketches I did today. The first is Wolverine...of course. The second is that Seattle crime-fighting freak, Phoenix Jones. I've been meaning to create one of these for a while. My original intention was to go and have some t-shirts screen printed locally, and have hard copies on hand to sell...but with things being so much easier to do over the Internet, as well as my incredible lack of funds, I figure this is the best road to take for now. My goal is to create a shirt every couple of weeks, and to promote the crap out of it via this blog, twitter, facebook, deviantArt, and any other means I can find.

It kind of sucks that to make it independently, I have to pretty much be something I hate...a perpetual self promotion machine. In hip hop and World of Warcraft terms they call it "grinding." I don't like it, but I have no choice. Ain't nobody gonna stumble over anything I do, and proceed to fall over themselves to give me money for stuff...I's gotsta go outs and TAKES IT! Or at least takes what I cans. :D

So if you find me being pushy in the months to come...forgive me.

Now buy a shirt! The Undead Poultry Horde is lookin' to BEEF up its ranks! Assimilate, before it's too late, or you'll be left to face the dreaded PECK OF DOOM!

(NOTE: If anyone knows of a better t-shirt printing place online that doesn't dick you so hard monetarily, lemme know. I hate the idea of having to charge damn near $25.00 just so I can make two or three dollars on the deal. There's gotta be a better alternative out there, I just haven't seen one yet. I never posted anything about it on the blog last time, but about a month or two ago I did a round of $1.00 Sketch Commissions. Basically, you give me a dollar, I give you a sketch (digital commission, and very quick). This is to both incentivize drawing all the time, plus earns me a little extra money...not much, but every bit helps, y'know? Anyway, the first round went fairly well, so I'm doing it again. The above image is the first block of finished sketches from this round.

In other news, still swamped with projects. Currently doing turnarounds for a cartoon project I can't talk about. Just wrapped up doing concept work for a video game project I can't talk about. And I'm still putting the final touches on my soon to be art book, as well as trying to put together some prints, and original artwork to sell at the cons I'll be attending this year. So far I think I'm scheduled to be at Emerald City Comicon (in Seattle), WonderCon (in San Francisco), and San Diego Comicon (in...well, San Diego).

All of that when I'm not at the day job, hanging with the wife, or corrupting my daughter with all of my whacko humor and thoughts. I wish the days were longer...and that I could learn to run on no sleep. Oh well...

Here is a piece I did for my online art group, pencilneckgeekz (aka PNGz). I run it on deviantArt, and it's purpose is to get artists to do at least one finished piece a month. We supply the theme, and members supply the effort and drive to get something done. Check it out!

Been crazy busy the last couple weeks. Putting the finishing touches on my art book. It will be a shared art book with my business partner, Hainanu Saulque. 100 pages, full color, featuring 50 pages of original artwork from moi. The book will be sort of a greatest hits for me, featuring some of the best stuff I've done over the last couple of years to current. Picking pieces for it has been fun, but daunting. I should have more info about the book very soon, as we're shooting to have it back from the printers before Emerald City Comicon, which is the beginning of March. I know, we're down to the wire.

And for anyone wondering, my half of the art book will be titled: Brain Vomit Vol. 1. I know, catchy right?

I'm pretty pleased with how this thing is turning out. I'm doing all of the initial sketches with a red crayola marker. I dig all of the crazy under layer stuff that's left after I start coloring.

Babys and Saints...but not in that order.

So it's a Wednesday. How ya doin'? I'm doin' good. Went to Wal-Mart today. Picked up the "travel system" for the baby-to-be. Crazy business this baby stuff. I remember when a stroller was just a stroller, but now, because we can remove the seat and put it in the car, it's a "system" of some kind. Whenever I hear the word "system" I think of large complicated things that work together toward some ultimate goal. I suppose the baby "travel system" works to keep the baby safe no matter the mode of transportation, but the word "system" seems like an embellishment.

The wife says: "Hey, I did the research. This one won't cut the baby's fingers off on accident."

I can always trust my wife to put things into perspective, as I was unaware that there were other "systems" randomly amputating the digits of newborns across this crazy globe. I would hate myself if I bought a "travel system" for cheap, only to have it be some monstrous contraption that fed on baby fingers. That would put me in the "Not a Good Dad" category, and I definitely don't want to be there. At least, not yet. I gotta let the baby give me a reason first. That's only fair.

Oh, and hey, I drew something for the blog today. Well, I didn't actually "draw" it today. I drew it a couple weeks ago, I just never got around to scanning it. Well, consider it scanned. It's of a dude called The Saint, and he's the ultimate good guy of a little off-color comic book called "The Pro." If you haven't read "The Pro" you're really doing yourself a disservice. It's a great book, full of inappropriate material. Really...go pick it up and read it to your kids. I've already read it to my unborn baby...thrice!

Well, gotta go. Gonna pull the "travel system" out of the box and see just how damned complicated it's going to be to put together. Any extra parts I'll sell on craigslist.

This was today's wind-down sketch, that I decided to ink...with a brush! HAH! Can you say "pimpin'"? Well I'm sure you can, because it's a fun word. It's amazing Billy the Kid once called a guy a "pimp" as an insult, resulting in a threat of violence, resulting in Billy the Kid shooting the guy he just alleged to be a "pimp." Why do I keep putting the word "pimp" in quotations? Maybe it's just because whenever I say "pimp" I feel it needs to be emphasized? Maybe it's because I'm crazy? Or maybe...just maybe, it's because "pimp" and quotations go together like biscuits and "gravy"?

What, you didn't think "pimp" was the only word that got the quotation treatment with me, did you?

SDCC 2010 Sketchcards...

Ain't wrote up an SDCC 2010 recap yet, and y'know...I probably won't be anytime soon. Not that I didn't have plenty of shit to write about (I certainly do), I'm just not in the mood to write about myself or the things happening in my life currently. Sorry. I'd rather sit at the keyboard, upload some of the latest sketches I've done for people, and possibly just ramble on about whatever pops into my head at the time. Like now. I'm not thinking about anything I'm writing in this blog post now. I'm just letting my fingers dance...

Sorry, I just picked my nose and lost my train of thought.

So anyway, I will say that while at SDCC (San Diego Comic-Con if you don't know what SDCC means) I had the pleasure of getting to meet a lot of great folk, and had the double-pleasure (that's like, "the pleasure" but times two!) of getting to draw for some of them. Actually I think I ended up drawing like 20 sketchcards in like two days, so that was something. On the spot shit, too. And a bunch of characters I've never head of before, so yeah...it was good times.

Above are a couple of the cards I did. The Panty Dropper and Oink Oink Baby cards were my own. The other two were requested by folks who bought books. I got to play with paint pens which I promptly fell in love with.

Maybe I'll post some of the pictures I took with some of the celebs I bumped into while I was there. No guarantees or anything. I can guarantee more sketches though. That will happen. So if you like that kind of thing, feel free to hang out for a while.

So, I'm doing some concept work for a project I won't name...not yet anyway. It's something the creator and I have discussed a few times over the last couple of months, and our schedules have finally freed themselves up enough for us to really take a good crack at it. With any luck, this thing might go somewhere.

Sorry for the crappy picture. I did these concept sketches on my giant 14x17 drawing pad. I've had it for years upon years. I like to sketch rough ideas out on it sometimes...as opposed to piece ideas which I'll sketch in my little sketchbook.

Anyway, hope ya'll dig some of these. I don't know how many (if any) will make the cut and move on to the next round. This is just the start.

So yesterday I did a couple things: I started a Big Trouble in Little China art group on deviantart.com. I watched the series premiere of Louis C.K.'s new show on F/X, "Louie." I agreed to "Machete" themed art trade with my good buddy and fellow artist Chad Fuller. And I finished that Darth Vader piece. Pretty productive day. What will today bring? New bedding for my new Cal-King, Cherry Limeades for the wife and I, and mailing off the rebates we got with our new phones? Yeah, that sounds like a plan. Might even take that Louie sketch to the next stage. We shall see...

WIP: Yoda & Count Dooku

Here's a work in progress. Started it last night, I'll finish it today after work. It's for a local art show being held at my favorite Sacramento comic book shop, Empire Comics Vault this weekend. The show is gonna feature a lot of local artists, and as far as I know, all the pieces will be for sale. If you live in the area, you oughta come check it out!

This is sort of an old sketch. Drew this back in March during the Emerald Con in Seattle. This is my buddy, Ben Schwartz's character, Trixie Dynamite. I saw her and instantly fell in love with the bubble-gum cheesecake potential. I've pushed Ben to give me a Trixie story to draw, but ain't got nothin' yet. I'll keep prodding though. Oh yes I will!

Yo dawg. I'm just sittin' here...allergies kick-kick-kickin' my caboose all over the place. I hate Spring. Right now I'm waiting for my wife to get home so I can run Ninja Assassin and Love Happens back to the movie machine inside my favorite grocery store. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up the new Sherlock Holmes and Men Who Stare At Goats movies. Love Happens was okay. Decent for a chick flick. Aaron Eckhart is dreamy. Ain't watched Ninja Assassin yet. I know, and I'm taking it back. I'ma still watch it though. I'll use my stealthy DVD-ninjary skills. Word.

Oh hey, lookit the top of the post. I'm posting the pencils to page 2 of a story that'll be coming out this May in "Tales from the Torn Universe vol. 1" at Phoenix Cactus Con! I do all my own pencils...and stunts. I also do everything in red. I like red. It makes me happy to then go and ink over the red. Yeah, I ink my original pencils, too. I know...crazy. Lock me up, I'm outta my mind!

Still waiting for HBO On Demand to throw up the second half of season two of "The Wire." That's a good show. Another show I'm loving right now is the Starz original, "Spartacus: Blood and Sand." Talk about a wow moment! Good shit that show is. Reminds me of "Rome" (another classic) for the NASCAR sect. I don't like NASCAR, but I do like anything that vaguely resembles "Rome," so there you go.

I'm gonna start posting some movie reviews here soon. Just so I can have a reason to post stuff, since I haven't been very good about posting sketches. It's not laziness of drawing--I'm doing shit tons of that. I just haven't been wanting to take the time to come here, write something, and upload the work I've been doing. So, y'know...slap me around for that if you're down.

Random Bad Guy Day

Hey yo. It's random bad guy day here at the YourBuddyBuddy blog (I say that as if this is some kind of office, and not just some dude sitting at a computer in his office typing away late into the night), and with that comes the random bad guy of the day - I'm calling him Bubble Head, because his head is in a bubble. Seriously though, I have no idea what this guy is about, other than climbing out of my pencil as I sit half asleep during "The Informant" last night. Decent movie, but not as funny as I was expecting. It was actually kind of sad.

Anyway, I've sort of had no real time to draw for myself in a LONG time, so my warm-up sketches hence forth are going to either be A) devoted to prepping future projects or B) spent cranking out weird bad guys for future Cracker Ace stories. Either way it's a plan full of win.

On that note: It's time to go watch the season finale of "Burn Notice."

Sac-Con 2010 & Snuggies R EEE-VIL

Howdy! So yesterday was the first Sac-Con of 2010 and I had a pretty good time. The place was small, but surprisingly packed! I got several looks, but not many takers. I sold one copy of Torn Comics "Twist in the Night" and two copies of my sketchbook, "Snuggies R EEE-VIL."

This first picture is Craig, a nice fellow who hung out for a bit and bought a sketchbook. He asked me to draw him a "naughty zombie fairy." You can't see it too good from the picture (camera phone--all I had on me) but she's wearing fishnets, a short skirt, taped nipples, holding a brain, and her bottom jaw is missing. This was actually the last thing I drew at the con, so it was nice to finish things off with something different. Thanks for pickin' up a book, Craig!

Here's Rorschach. He (although I'm pretty sure it was a "she" under the mask) also picked up a sketchbook. She gave me free reign to draw whatever, so I figured I might as well draw Rorschach! Good times. Thanks Rorschach...you demented little person you!

I currently have about 12 copies left of my first sketchbook, Snuggies R EEE-VIL. I won't be printing any more of these, so what you see is what I got. Sketch Card: Axe Cop

Sketchcard, 2012, and the start of the Con Season...

Thanks to everyone for the love and support over the loss of Cooper. I'm so glad I've got such a great group of people watching me (as I them).

Still inking like crazy. Pretty strange working today without Coop at my side. If we didn't have the new puppy, Sookie, things would probably be a lot worse emotionally. Of course, it's pretty tough to get anything done when you've got an 11 week old, 4lb peekapoo attacking your feet every chance she gets. Despite all that, though, I got quite a bit done today. Two and a half pages inked, and this sketchcard here.

The sketchcard is something I crapped out while watching "2012." Man, is that movie shitty. No offense to those who like the big dumb disaster movies of today...everybody has their thing. I prefer my disaster movies to be from the 70's, and to star Paul Newman, Gene Hackman, or George Kennedy.

The character on the card is nothing special. It's not a character I've had in my head or anything. Might tweak him up and use him as a villain for Cracker Ace or something. We'll see.

The Sac-Con is coming up this Sunday, March 7. I'm gonna be there with my Little Carbon Robot buds. I've been told we're gonna be sitting on a panel talking about what it's like to work in an art collective. I'm not exactly sure what to expect, other than a good time, and that's all I really care about. The following weekend I'll be headed with those same buds to Seattle for the Emerald City Con. I've never been there, and I'm horrifically unprepared, but it should be fun, and provide ample opportunity to meet new folks. I'll probably end up spending 80% of my time sitting at the table drawing sketchcards, or working on project stuff. I don't have a lot of free time to create a lot of non-project work, so I might not be able to fight the urge not to "work" while there. Whateverthecase, I'm definitely gonna be busy doing something.

Here's where me and the LCR Crew are gonna be Emerald. Make sure to stop by and say hello. I'm the big white guy with glasses and a Jimi Hendrix hat. I know I look scary, but I'm really not...I'm just really shy when in big groups of people (even in groups of people I know), and thus tend to look a little menacing. I promise you, I'm not mean! Yes, I'd love to meet you and chat about stuff! So come on by, or stop me on the floor...just don't talk to me in the bathroom. That's just weird.

Cooper 2001-2010

So this morning I wake up to scratches on my back. Cooper, who had a history of epilepsy, started to seizure early this morning. Because of his inability to eat or keep anything down, we weren't able to give him the medicine he takes every day for the last day and a half. These seizures coupled with his already deteriorated state, we thought the humane decision was to go ahead and put him down. There is more to it than this, but it's not necessary to go into all the little details here.

Cooper was the best dog I've ever known. He was sweet, he was a snuggler, he was always ready to climb into my lap and just chill. I still don't think his passing has hit me yet--it probably won't hit me until I come home from work tonight, and he's not there to greet me in his way.

I'm gonna miss you, little buddy.

Cooper, the Blog, and some Raph...

I'm pretty worried about my dog. His name is Cooper, he's 9, and he's a toy poodle. He's the coolest dog in the world (I know every dog owner says that about their dog, but in this case, it just so happens to be true), but for the past four days he's been really sluggish, won't eat, and at times throws up a brownish-orange foamy goo, with tiny pieces of hair mixed in. I've got a vet appointment for him on Monday and I'm hoping everything checks out fine and they say he's just got a bug of some kind. It's been pretty rainy here, so it wouldn't surprise me if he ate something growing wild in the backyard. He's like that...eats anything that looks or smells like food. It doesn't have to be both. One or the other is good enough.

Right now he's laying on my arm, so I'm literally typing with one arm on lockdown. I've owned dogs before, and I've been around a lot of dogs--I've always considered myself a dog person--but I've never had a bond with a dog like I have with Cooper. He's made it clear that I'm his person, he wants to be with me at all times (without being possessive or aggressive). He's either in my lap or at my feet, and rarely anywhere else. I'll stop rambling on about how great he is, I guess. With some luck, his visit on Monday will put an end to my worrying.

On a lighter note, been sprucing up the old blog. Been meaning to do it for some time really, just never took the time to drop in the changes. I like the fact that Blogger has brought back the option of dropping a widget between the header and the body sections of the blog. It's perfect to doing a webcomic or placing ads and the like. I seeing how it looks with a Cracker Ace page up there (if you don't see it, don't worry you're not crazy, I'm only leaving it up for a few hours). Maybe when I get some free time I'll bust out some quick comic strips or something to run here for kicks. Always got ideas, just don't ever have the time to do them. I also like how you can create unique pages for different things as well, instead of everything being in posts. I think Blogger is trying to compete with Wordpress, which is a good thing. Competition means great things for the consumer...even if I don't actually pay for anything here. Anyway...

Big Honkin' Dump!

How-DEE! It's been a while since my last confession, so let's just do one big massive dump today. Gonna start things off with some sketches I did a few months ago of Brock Samson, Err, and the Hulk. Don't know why I chose these three at that time, they just popped into my head.

Next up is a piece I did earlier this year of the dreaded, Green Goblin! First time drawing this cat, and I rather enjoyed it! More detail here than I normally do, too, so yay for me!

And lastly here's a recent sketch I did while watching American Idol of Kratos. I was originally only going to draw Kratos, but then I thought, "Hey, I wanna draw some boobies, too!" so I drew some boobies too, on the lovely form of that wicked hot temptress, Medusa. Thought I'd get all goofy with it by throwing a wood texture underneath it, y'know, because I can.

My plan this week was to do my Little Carbon Robot Challenge piece 100% digitally, just to keep practicin' with the old (NEW) tablet I bought.

But, after about seven failed attempts at something I thought I was gonna like, I decided to shelve the whole shebang until I was hit by the ole inspirado. So Monday became Wednesday, and Wednesday became Saturday, some other week days were lost in the mix somewhere along the way, and before you know it, it's early Sunday morn, and I ain't got crap to show for the challenge. So I says to myself, "Myself, what are you gonna do to rectify this sitch-e-a-shun?" And so I answers back, "Me, I'm gonna get to crack-a-lackin'!" And so, with a pencil in one hand, and a tumbler of Big Red in the other, I hammered out something I'm not all that fond of, but fond enough of to call it a day, post that shit, and move on with my life. I'm not a Spidey fan, ya'll, and this week really shows it. Drawin' Peter Parker was a pain, but I did it. I did enough of it anyways.

If I have time someday, I might ink this sucker, but I ain't holding my breath, so you shouldn't either. If anyone else out there wants to ink it, well hey, permission granted!

Been a little while since I update the ole blog, so here's an update. I've been working on Cracker Ace, as well as other art commitments. One thing I've been doing is taking part in a weekly character challenge with my art buds here in Sacramento. So far the challenge has been good. Here's my last contribution for the project...the Creature from the Black Lagoon. It's a progression from digital sketch to finished pencils.

Along with my character challenge, my Torn Comics mates held a contest for folks to draw kids dressed as their favorite Torn Comics characters. The winner got a free copy of Twist in the Night (the horror anthology from Torn Comics) as well as an inked character sketch from the Torn artist of their choice. I was picked by the winner to do the commission, and they chose Johnny 5 from "Short Circuit." WOW! Never drawn that character before, but hey, I'm game. Here's my initial digital sketch...

Little Carbon Robot Challenge - Week 1

My Little Carbon Robot pals and I are doing a weekly character challenge to help generate more work consistently, as well as push ourselves to draw things we wouldn't normally even think to touch. Our assignments are characters generated randomly from a list that currently has more than 600 names. I'm posting this image to show the actual size of my first rough sketch. Took a thumbnail sketch and decided to just pencil it out completely on a standard size of printer paper, with my reference for the ugly evil queen from Snow White on it. I've decided to start posting sketchbook pages here as I finish them. This sketchbook isn't going to be like other sketchbooks I've done in the past (sparsely used, often forgotten, and never finished). My plan is to try and fill an entire sketchbook from cover to cover as soon as possible. I've never filled a sketchbook completely, and I'm curious as to how long it will take me. I'm also not moving to the next page before filling up the current page. These will mostly be warm-up sketches, and sketches of characters I'm either currently drawing for projects, reading, or watching at the moment. My hope is that when it's finished, I'll pick out pages I think are highlights, and make my official 2010 sketchbook out of that. We'll see how that goes.

For this first page I was inspired to draw a girlie after watching a video by one of my favorite DA artists, Pat Carlucci on youtube. It quickly turned from a girlie doing a sexy pose, to a lame joke about an STD. Oh ho ho ho...me.

It's been a while since I've posted anything, so I thought I'd give an update and say that I've got a lot of work brewing right now, and as soon as I can show it, I will. For now, here's a movie review...

Since "The 40-year-old Virgin" it seems like Judd Apatow can do no wrong. So far, I've enjoyed every movie has hand his hands in either as a director or producer. "Funny People" is no different. It works well as a fly-on-the-wall character study of a relationship between a wannabe comic named Ira (Seth Rogen) and veteran comic/actor George (Adam Sandler).

What works: For all the raunch Rogen has offered to the masses through his handful of films so far, he's excellent at playing the innocent and naive Ira. Adam Sandler is hard to take seriously when he's doing straight drama, as in "Reign Over Me," but here his performance was very natural as an over-the-hill comic who has no one because he's become a tremendous self-serving dick. The two have great on-screen chemistry. The relationship Ira has with his roommates (played by Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzman) is funny, and a consistent source for laughs.

What doesn't work: The love angle felt less about telling a good story, and more about trying to get ladies into movie seats. Without it, you're literally left with a guy movie littered with dick and fart jokes, but with it, you've got an extra sappy storyline heaped on top of the festivities that works to only grind the film to a dead stop. Because of the love angle, the movie always runs WAY too long. Clocking in at just over two hours and twenty minutes, this movie oughta be no more than an hour and forty-five minutes, two hours tops. And the Eminem cameo wasn't funny...it was just kind of weird, in a "Where in the hell is this coming from" sort of way.

High-Rent on this one.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is one of my favorite movies from my childhood. It is my favorite of the Mad Max series, because it's populated with so many cool looking characters. My favorite character by far is Ironbar, one of Auntie's main henchmen. With a bald head, arms littered with tattoos, and that weird kabuki mask on a stick hovering over his head all the time...what's not to love?

My first time drawing He-Man. Kind of sad, considering Masters of the Universe was my favorite cartoon as a kid. I used to own all the toys. My favorite character was Beast Man, cause he seemed to be the only guy who could get away with talking shit to Skeletor, always questioning Skeletor's leadership skills, and throwin' digs at him under his breath. Classic! I should have drawn Beast Man instead.

Here are a couple sketches I had in my sketchbook from a week or so back. The first is of my good bud Bryce's character, The Mechanic. The second is of Sam Kieth's The Maxx. Just workin' on keepin' things loose and fun with these.

Here is my first pass at drawing MAM's (Mysterious Adventure Magazine) horror character, The Stranger (aka Darkcry). I really like the style of this character, but I got a lot of the details wrong, considering I was drawing from memory. Plus the pose is really stiff, and no fun to look at. My second pass will but much more fun and accurate.

Went to bed watching The Venture Bros. last night, and realized that I'd never drawn Brock Samson before. So, thought I'd give it a shot.

Divin' into the old sketchbook!

Whelp, it's been a few days since I've been able to post anything, namely because my computer caught the petulant child virus and stopped obeying my commands! At least with kids you can spank 'em, or slap 'em upside the head...if I did that with a computer, I'd just hurt myself. Anyway, I've been granted permission to use the roomies comp, so I hooked up for the scanner, installed adobe, and got to scannin' a few things.

This first sketch is right outta the ole highly neglected sketchbook. It's of my favorite G.I. Joe, Gung-Ho! As a kid, and even now as an adult, I have an affinity for straight-up badasses, and Gung-Ho may very well be the first badass I ever actively rooted for. Well, him and Mr. T. Anyway, I had a crapload of fun drawing this, and I look forward to inking and coloring it at some point for a G.I. Joe jam a buddy of mine is doing. Can't wait!

Here's another sketchbook sketch I did recently of everyone's favorite superchick with the super mammaries...Wonder Woman! Ain't drawn here in a long while, and I gotta say, I can totally see myself turning the proverbial corner when it comes to drawing females. I'm still learning, but I think I've finally figured it out...and it only took 29 and a half years!

This last one here is of a character whose become somewhat of a recent favorite of mine, Guy Gardner. I remember being asked to draw this dude about a year ago for one of those 10 Free Sketch things that I never completed. Well, long overdue, here's my first ever attempt at him. I plan on drawing him again soon, as I think this pose isn't dynamic enough, but it was fun to practice trying to convey attitude, as well as working on folds in fabric as seen on his jacket. Oh, and for Guy Gardner purists, I just realized that I have him wearing a Green Lantern ring, and not the yellow ring he oughta be wearing in this incarnation...I promise not to make that mistake again.

It's been a fun couple days, even without the net. I've got a bucketload of sketches yet to scan in, but this is all I can show for today. Hope everyone digs 'em.

House M.D. - Commission

Hey peeps. A buddy of mine recently commissioned me for a House piece. He's a nut for the show, and specifically Dr. Gregory House. Dresses like him on Halloween, quotes the show, all that stuff. He wanted me to base it on an existing picture of House in a bathtub full of pain pill bottles. Of couse he had to pick a picture with a lot of detail...the jerk. Anyway, here's what I sketched out. Hopefully he digs it.

This is being done on 11x17 Card Stock, and because I plan to color this with markers, I laid it out with 6H lead, and finished it up with a standard HB. I like how it turned out...wasn't sure I could do it.

Captain America...the Director's Cut!

It's done! Haha, I finally finished it. Decided not to do the hard thing, and transfer the image to better paper, but rather tough it out on he copy paper and deal with what I had already. It's not 100% what I was hoping for, but it is what it is.

If ya'll like this process stuff, I'll do more. If you don't, I won't bother. If I hear nothing, I'll take it ya'll feel more akin to the latter statement, and I'll just keep groovin'. No pressure to comment...though they're always nice. hehe

Some other notes about the day: Picked up some new materials today...different leads for my pencils, including some non-repro blue lead for my trusty mechanical pencil. Also picked up a newer, bigger tool box for all my markers and shtuff, which has been a long time coming. I've been working out of my old little tool box, and a shoe box, and it's sucked. I'm rolling in style again, and it feels good!

After my trip to the art store, I swung by the theater place and peeped this movie called "Star Trek," maybe you've heard of it. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it, and walked out glad I decided to spend full price to see it. Haven't done that since "Watchmen" back in March...which is a real dry spell for me. And it looks like there are a slate of really good movies coming out this summer for me to look forward to, and ponder on whether I'll be plunking down the duckets to seem them.

Of the trailers I saw, I was most excited by the trailers for the new Pixar flick, "Up" and Focus Films' "9." The new Transformer movie looks okay, and I was less than impressed with the trailer for G.I. Joe...I think I'll wait for DVD on those.

Started playing with acrylics today. Did up a Hellboy piece that I'm currently trying not to mangle. I might show it...although I probably won't. Ain't painted anything since high school, which means it's been over a decade since I picked up a brush. But, I've had this hankering to play with paints, pastels, colored pencils, and crayons lately, so I hope to have some new stuff with these new mediums up sooner than later. That's all I got for now.

Captain America Flat Colors!

Hey hey hey! So I'm burnin' the midnight oil here in Bruceville, supplyin' the flat marker colors to Cap here. I'm playin' with Crayola markers on this one, so I'm still a little fuzzy on how to make them work to my advantage. This is also on standard copy paper, and the Crayolas are wetter on regular paper than I had anticipated. I may have to transfer this onto some bristol board before I call it done. Either way, the process is a movin', and here be they latest step.

Captain America Lineart!

So here's the quick and dirty lineart. I don't worry so much about being precise with this step, but rather to just separate the parts for coloring. I like to ink with really thick lines, so any trembling in the lineart is covered up when I do the finished inks.

Hope to get the colored version up soon. Hope everyone had a great holiday, and remembered to pay their respect.

Captain America Finished Pencils

Lately I haven't even been doing this step, as I can usually go in and create the inked lineart instead of this step, but I thought for doing a step-by-step, I'd go ahead and show this part since this was an integral part of my process for a very long time.

Hey peeps! Well, got everything running smoothly now. Actually, that's not correct. There is one issue I still have after having hooked everything up--I can upload images from my computer to this blog or my deviantart page through IE, but I can't through Firefox. I'm sure it's just one click to fix, but I can't find it. So, if anyone out there knows what I'm talking bout, any help would be appreciated!

On to more important news, in honor of Memorial Day, I thought I'd do a quick sketch of Captain America! This one took about 10 minutes, and I'm thinking I'll go ahead and finish it, and scan the steps as I go. Never done one of those, and I think that would be a fun thing to do.

Please have a fun and safe Memorial Day. And don't forget to take the time to pay your respects to the fallen heroes who've died serving our country, as well as giving thanks to the our nation's veterans and those still serving! Witout them, our beer drinking and burger eating would be a lot less enjoyable, cause we'd be sharing time with fearing for our lives.

Finally got the new pooter hooked up. Still trying to find all the necessary discs to finish installing my hardware and programs, but so far everything is running smoothly. To get back on the art horse here at the blog, I figured I'd post a fully colored marker piece I did for my dad as a birthay present. He was an Iron Man fan as a kid, and he's a big fan of the movie. I had a lot of fun doing this one up, considering it was the first time I seriously tried drawing Iron Man.
